The Heights Through a Local’s Eye: Jacqueline Perry
If you’ve ever walked the shady streets of The Heights with a diaper bag over one shoulder and a cold brew in the other — hi, we’d probably get along.
I’m Jacqueline Perry, Editor-in-Chief of The Heights Days.
As a longtime Heights resident and mom of two littles, I’ve made it my mission to find the spots that make everyday life just a little more joyful. The places with good vibes, good food, and space for a stroller (bonus points if no one gives you side-eye when you walk in with a toddler).
This list isn’t about what’s trendy — it’s about what’s true. These are my go-to places for play, coffee, sanity breaks, and everything in between.
The Bunny Hive
The cutest play space in town — hands down. The Bunny Hive is packed with classes for all ages (yes, even babies), plus seasonal events that make it a year-round favorite. It’s calm, creative, and — bonus — actually aesthetic. A total win for parents who want a little vibe with their playtime.
Honeychild’s Sweet Creams
Tucked inside M-K-T, this is our favorite ice cream spot in all of Houston. The small-batch, seasonal flavors are made with local ingredients, and the vibe is chill enough for post-park treats or a spontaneous Tuesday night sugar fix.
Heights Mercantile Farmers Market
This is my weekend ritual. From fresh produce and homemade pasta to meats, coffee, and the occasional flower haul, the Heights Farmers Market makes meal prep feel like an adventure. Plus, there's often live music and kid-friendly pop-ups that turn a grocery run into a full-on outing.
The Heights Hike & Bike Trail
If you know, you know. This trail feels like a secret city inside the city — gliding past murals, porches, shady oaks, and yes, a few of the best cloud-shaped dogs in town. My favorite time? Golden hour on the M-K-T Trail, when it turns into a mix of families, skaters, and everyone just soaking up the magic.
Nan & Company Properties
Real estate with heart and hustle. Nancy Almodovar and her team go way beyond just selling homes — they celebrate the quirks that make each Heights house special. Their listings feel personal, not polished to the point of boring. If you want someone who’ll point out where the best porches and breakfast tacos are during a home tour? These are your people.
Bungalow Heights
Whether it's brunch with friends, a laid-back dinner, or trivia night, Bungalow Heights is a crowd-pleaser. Great cocktails, easygoing atmosphere, and a solid menu that works for whatever mood you’re in — even if that mood includes toddlers.
Heights Bier Garten
Twinkle lights, picnic tables, great drinks, and a stroller-friendly vibe? Say less. Heights Bier Garten feels like the backyard party we all wish we could throw. It’s casual, fun, and somehow always hits the right note whether you're meeting friends or just taking a break from the chaos of parenting.
Got a favorite I should add to the list? I’m always on the lookout for new gems — send me a message and let’s keep the local love going.
