The Ultimate Toddler-Friendly Day in The Heights
A good day in The Heights can look a lot of ways — but if you’ve got a toddler in tow, it helps to have a plan. One with shady trails, fenced-in playgrounds, snacks (lots of snacks), and a few secret spots that turn meltdowns into magic.
Here’s my go-to itinerary for a toddler-approved, parent-surviving kind of day — all within a few blocks of home.
Morning Stroll: Heights Boulevard Esplanade Trail
Start at 4th Street and cruise up the esplanade trail — it’s wide, stroller-friendly, shaded, and full of visual toddler bait: sculptures, squirrels, porches with flags, and the occasional overly friendly dog.
Snack stop tip: There’s a bench around 11th Street that’s perfect for a goldfish break.
Mid-Morning Energy Burn: Donovan Park
This is the Heights park — fully gated (praise be), full of imagination-sparking wooden play structures, ladders, bridges, mini “houses,” and yes, even a train.
Pro parent move: Bring sidewalk chalk or bubbles. That’s 20 more peaceful minutes in your pocket.
Lunch Break: Baby-Approved + Parent-Sane
Walk or drive to one of these easy wins:
Local Foods – Comfy seating, fresh food, kid-friendly choices, and a chill vibe
Torchy’s Tacos — Because queso is a family value
M-K-T Heights — Grab something fast, sit outside, and let your toddler run circles around the lawn
All our high chair friendly and diaper bag explosion tolerated.
Afternoon Wind-Down: Big Blue Whale + Jubilee
Two magical spots side-by-side on 19th Street. Big Blue Whale is a toy store, book nook, and candy wonderland all in one (enter at your own risk). Jubilee has whimsical gifts, a kids’ corner, and seriously fun vibes.
Let them pick out one tiny treasure = smooth ride home.
Optional: Stop by The Bunny Hive and see if there’s a class or event happening.
Sweet Treat Stop: Fat Cat Creamery
Small-batch ice cream, picnic benches, and the kind of flavors you’ll sneak bites of after they fall asleep.
Bonus: the mural outside makes the perfect photo op if you can catch your toddler standing still for 0.4 seconds.
Optional Endcap: Lawrence Park
If your kid skipped the stroller nap (how dare they), this quiet neighborhood park is the perfect final stop. Slides, grass, and just enough energy burn before everyone melts.
Parent Survival Kit (Don’t Leave Home Without It):
Wipes (for everything)
A not-too-thick blanket for impromptu picnics
Backup onesie (because obviously)
Snacks that don’t melt
Low expectations + sunglasses
Fans. Always fans.
See You Out There
Life with a toddler is loud, unpredictable, and kind of amazing. And in The Heights, there’s always something around the corner that makes the chaos feel a little more magical.
Whether you’re new to the neighborhood or just needed a fresh idea for how to spend the day — I hope this little loop gives you a few moments of peace, joy, and maybe even a nap (for someone).
Have ones we missed? Let me know your go-to spots — I’m always adding to the list.
